Opening of an Anniversary Painting Exhibition by Vasil Velkov

An anniversary exhibition by the artist Vasil Velkov opened on May 7, 2026, at the Cultural Center „Jules Pascin”. The exhibition includes 33 works presented to the public for the first time, bringing together artists, cultural figures, and connoisseurs of fine art.

The opening was hosted by Dimitar Todorov, who welcomed the guests and presented the artist’s biography and creative development. He noted that a distinctive feature of Velkov’s work is its rich use of color combined with a clearly recognizable personal style. Todorov emphasized the multi-layered nature of the paintings, where different techniques, genres, and artistic approaches intertwine.

The exhibition features themes related to the animal world, the Bulgarian village and its architecture, as well as female figures described as 'Bulgarian Madonnas.' Some works contain symbolic elements and references to the artist’s childhood and birthplace. The influence of literary motifs was also noted, including allusions to the work of Yordan Radichkov.

Vasil Velkov was born in 1965 in Vidin. He graduated from the Art High School in Plovdiv and later from the National Academy of Arts in Sofia under Prof. Krasimir Valkanov and Prof. Kolyo Nikolov. Since returning to Vidin, he has remained closely connected to the city’s cultural life, including working as a fine arts teacher at the 'St. Cyril and Methodius' Secondary School.

The exhibition remains open until May 14 at the Cultural Center „Jules Pascin”.
